Cardinals predicted to potentially embrace fire sale at trade deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals are going to be an interesting team in the coming weeks. Their trade deadline strategy hinges on where they are in the standings on July 31. They haven't decided whether to buy, sell, both, or potentially stand pat. There are certainly several options available to them. The Cards have plenty of trade chips on expiring contracts, particularly in their bullpen, which includes Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz and Phil Maton. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report predicts that when all is said and done, St. Louis could be true sellers in the coming weeks. "Like Cincinnati, St. Louis squandered a chance to make a move in this crowded NL wild-card picture, breaking even in its six games at home against a pair of teams going nowhere fast. Wilting in the late innings of what was a bullpen game for the Braves on Saturday was the dagger, setting up what might be a 'Loser Embraces a Fire Sale' series with Arizona this weekend," Miller wrote. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Helsley, Matz and Maton could all bring back solid returns for a team that desperately needs more pitching in the farm system to set them up for 2026 and beyond. They are only 1 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race, but it's clear that their current roster, even if they add to it, is not capable of competing with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and others. It could be a long second half for the Cardinals, who are starting to show some signs of slowing down. Perhaps this could lead to them unloading some of their expiring contracts. They will have a new front office next season, so it makes sense to set Chaim Bloom up for success in 2026 and beyond. It will be interesting to see how St. Louis approaches the deadline. More MLB:

ST. LOUIS (AP) – José Fermín hit his first major league home run to break a sixth-inning tie in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on a soggy Sunday. In his 159th career plate appearance, the 26-year-old Fermín smacked a sinker over the left-field fence off Jesse Chavez (0-1) with Masyn Wynn on base to cap the scoring. Two rain delays totaled 4 hours 2 minutes. The game lasted 2:38. The Braves added a run off Gordon Graceffo (3-0) in the seventh. Graceffo threw 1 2/3 innings. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 19th save. Matt Olson led the Braves with three RBIs on two hits. Chavez started the fifth for Atlanta. He gave up two runs with two outs when Willson Contreras dropped a double in shallow right field to tie it at 3. Reliever Steven Matz surrendered two runs in the fifth. Just before the game was halted for a second time, Olson singled home two runs for a 3-1 advantage. St. Louis went up 1-0 in the second inning off Atlanta's Daniel Davis, who was recalled before the game and made his seventh career start and first this season. The Braves touched St. Louis starter Sonny Gray for a run in the third on three consecutive two-out singles in the third. Nick Allen scored on Olson's single off the wall in right field. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was ejected in the bottom of the ninth. It was his fourth ejection this season. Key moment–Wynn's hustle led to the St. Louis' first run. Wynn never stopped at third and scampered home to score without a throw. Key stat–Fermín is hitting .381 in nine games since his June 25 recall from Triple-A Memphis. Up next–The Braves return to action Friday when they host the New York Yankees. The Cardinals return to play Friday at Arizona.

(AP Photo/Jeff Roberson) ST. LOUIS (AP) — Sean Murphy, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Marcell Ozuna homered and the Atlanta Braves rallied against St. Louis' two top relievers to beat the Cardinals 7-6 on Saturday. Nacho Alvarez Jr., filling in for injured third baseman Austin Riley, singled twice and scored the winning run on Jurickson Profar's ninth-inning groundout against closer Ryan Helsley (3-1). Advertisement Murphy, who hit the two longest home runs of this season at Busch Stadium on Friday night, put the Braves ahead 6-5 with a high drive that cleared the glove of José Fermín as he leaped at the left-field wall in the eighth. The three-run shot was Murphy's 16th homer of the season and the first allowed by reliever Phil Maton in 37 appearances this season. St. Louis tied it when pinch-runner Garrett Hampson scored on a wild pitch by Daysbel Hernández (4-1) in the eighth. Raisel Iglesias pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save. Yohel Pozo and Nolan Gorman homered, and Brendan Donovan had two hits, including an RBI single in the eighth, for the Cardinals. Advertisement St. Louis, which had been shut out in each of Erick Fedde's previous three starts, broke through with three runs against Atlanta opener Aaron Bummer in the second inning to draw even after early home runs Acuña and Ozuna. Pozo led off the bottom of the second with a double into the left-field corner and scored on Thomas Saggese's RBI single. Gorman followed with a 423-foot blast to tie it at 3. Pozo added a go-ahead solo homer in the sixth. Acuña, who pulled himself out of the home run derby in Atlanta next Tuesday, hit a 379-foot drive into the Braves' bullpen in the first. Ozuna clobbered a 422-foot solo shot in the second, and Alvarez made it 3-0 with a single for his first big-league RBI in nine career games. Advertisement Key moment After the St. Louis bullpen had retired seven in a row, Profar doubled to lead off the eighth and Acuña drew a one-out walk to set the table for Murphy's 372-foot drive. Key stat Murphy has seven home runs in his last 11 games. He had hit just two in his prior 33 games. Up next RHP Sonny Gray (9-3, 3.51 ERA), whose last turn in the rotation was moved up a day to allow him to squeeze in an extra start before the All-Star break takes the mound Sunday for St. Louis. Atlanta had not announced a starter. ___ AP MLB:
